mulling spice mix

mulling spice mix

This is really simple to make and is a great gift for this time of year. Buy a little glass jar at the bulk barn or dollar store (important to be able to see through your container because the colours and textures are really pretty). Or, you can just use it at home, especially when expecting guests as it makes your house smell amazing.

Add this mixture to simmering red wine, apple cider (great for kids’ parties) or cranberry juice.

mulling spice mix

• 8 ginger root slices
• 6 1” lemon peel strips
• 6 1″ orange peel strips
• 2 tbsp whole cloves
• 2 tbsp whole allspice (little balls)
• 12 cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces (mortal & pestal works well, meat pounder or by hand)

FOR THE MULLING MIX

DRY the lemon and orange strips and ginger root slices for 24 hours on a drying rack.

Tear them up into pieces into a bowl (Photo below shows approx amount of pieces required for this recipe). Add remaining ingredients. Done!

TO MAKE A DRINK

Put 4 cups of apple cider, cranberry juice or wine in a pot on the store.

Add 1-2 tbsp of the mulled spice mix. You can place it in a tea ball or diffuser or cheese cloth, or simply let it float and strain it when you pour into mugs.

Let it simmer for 20 minutes, or longer if you are looking for the yummy house smell.

Strain and serve. Enjoy!
